Want to know how to succeed in English? According to this Ted speaker, sleeping more can help.
In this small talk with a “big idea”, Ariana Huffington shares what she thinks can help you be more effective and creative in life and business.
I recorded this episode a bit different than the other Ted Talk Tuesday episodes. In this one I will go through the short talk (3-minutes) and explain the vocab and expressions she uses while I am discussing the talk itself.
Why am I doing it like this?
You could consider this a shorter, more “English focused” lesson. But hopefully not boring! I hate boring English lessons like I hate waiting in lines (I guess because it’s boring too).
So the idea is for you to learn some new words and expressions while also getting some quick tips on how to live a better life, and develop a better English.
Bamo!
- People today think that it’s “cool” and a sign of success if you can get by with only a few hours of sleep a night.
- Business is failing because we don’t value sleep as a society, and our best ideas are “dormant”
- Want to perform at your best? Sleep 7-9 hours a night.
Dormant = quiet and inactive, as during sleep
Type-A personality = a behavior pattern characterized by aggressiveness, ambitiousness, restlessness, and a strong sense of time urgency.
To brag = to talk or write about oneself in a proud or self-impressed way
One-up (someone) = to make a point of outdoing, outperforming, outclassing, etc., someone.
To get (something) IN = to find time to do something
Did you hear about my brother who slept with his head under the pillow? When he woke up, the fairies had taken all his teeth.
*In the US (and maybe other countries) when a child loses a tooth, they put it under their pillow and a “fairy” comes and takes it, usually leaving some money or candy. So his brother, put his whole head under the pillow and the fairies came and took all his teeth, mistakingly.
Oops.
